Benjamin Costas to chair “animal welfare” session at Aquaculture Europe 2025
Updated news

From September 22 to 25, Valencia will host Aquaculture Europe 2025 (AE2025) under the theme “Aquaculture for All.” The event aims to highlight the essential role of aquaculture in global food supply through its diversity of species, technologies, and production systems, as well as its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Leading the organization of AE2025 in Spain is the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Generalitat Valenciana, the Valencia Convention Bureau, and the ThinkinAzul project. A key focus of the conference will be the “Welfare” session, coordinated by Benjamín Costas (Principal Investigator at CIIMAR and head of the Aquatic Animal Health group) and Juan Miguel Mancera (Professor of Zoology at the University of Cádiz).
Costas and Mancera emphasize that this session presents a vital opportunity to address the importance of animal welfare in aquaculture, not only as an ethical responsibility but also as a key factor in improving industry sustainability and efficiency. Healthy animals are more productive and less prone to disease outbreaks, making welfare a critical component of future industry success.
Researchers are encouraged to participate and submit abstracts for the “Welfare” session by May 1. Aquaculture Europe 2025 promises to bring together experts, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the latest trends, innovations, and technological advancements, fostering new synergies and shaping the future of the sector.
